The Danger of a Single Story
This Animas High School exhibition was about Africa and we had to write fictional story about a country you wanted to learn about. Before we wrote our stories we read a book called “Things Fall Apart”. The we started writing a single story. A single story are stories that make stereotypes and block out the facts of what our writing about. After we finished writing our stories we picked a passage that we liked and wanted read we fixed grammar errors. We prepped for the exhibition for two days. Finally the exhibition came. For the exhibition we read in a coffee shop to the public.
In 10th grade two years ago they did Africa I thought we were going to do something else but we did Africa I thought it was going to be bad but it went really good. The danger of a single story was our exhibition and I thought that when really well compared to other Exhibitions. I’ve done in the past. Learning about imperialism in Africa was difficult because it is sad what happend to africa and how people think they can just take what they want without consequences. I think looking back on Africa is a consensus because some of the European countries threw Africa back in time. When the European countries when to Africa and colonized it and split it up into borders and that made Africa into what we think and know about it in the 21st century.
What I'm proud of in my story is how I was able to write about whatever I wanted to and still make it relevant to my time period with was the 1800s. Challenging making the climax do you want to make him die, live or just not anything at all. It was a lot of planning and redoing to make a great climax. If I had a chance to redo this project I would change the country I picked just to get the sense of what happen in other countries at times after imperialism in Africa and during.
How I made my book cover was by having a man walking in a tobacco fields and I thought that would help give a view of where he is. My cover relates to the theme that would set my story. I found that would help make a setting for where the story takes place. I’m proud of my whole book cover I think it is really creative and original and no one has one like mine. The most challenging part for my book cover was how to do the text. The font color, what the text should look like, text color, and were then text be. I would have liked to find some more like the guy that I had in my story with long hair.
The end of this project as a person I feel I have grown up was to look past the stereotypes of Africa. As a project this is one I feel like I will remember because I understand how to write more better then I have been. A single story I feel is a really good way to write about something you think isn't a good thing to write about. A lot of effort and research can go a long way. Take it in kids.
